About the Role We are seeking a Sr. Legal Counsel to join our growing legal team as we expand Rula’s reach and impact. You will serve as a key partner to our human resources, information technology, security, and other internal stakeholders to provide practical guidance that ensures our operations remain compliant while we pursue our mission of making mental healthcare work for everyone. In this role, you will take the lead on employment, privacy, and security legal matters, transforming complex regulations into practical, efficient, and actionable advice that supports our daily operations. You will be an integral part of building foundational processes in a fast-paced environment to directly support Rula’s achievement of its mission. Required Qualifications - 7+ years of progressive, relevant legal experience as a practicing attorney - 5+ years of employment law experience either in a law firm or in-house providing strategic guidance and legal support on variety of employment law matters including, but not limited to, worker classification; workplace policies and training; employee performance management; fair labor standards act requirements; equal employment opportunity commission matters; wage and hour issues; discrimination and sexual harassment; leave issues (e.g., Family Medical Leave Act); accommodations (e.g., American with Disabilities Act); retaliation and wrongful discharge. - 5+ years of healthcare privacy and security law experience including related to HIPAA, and state consumer privacy laws to support and provide guidance on privacy and security compliance; data breach and cyber incident response and management; contractual reviews of business associate agreements, data use agreements, security agreements, and other related agreements. - Strong writing, analytic, communication, and interpersonal skills to provide efficient, succinct, and practical guidance and support in a fast-paced working environment.. - Experience with state AI laws including in the employment and privacy context (e.g., workplace monitoring; automated decision making) Preferred Qualifications While having the preferred qualifications enhances your candidacy, having all of them is not mandatory. We encourage all interested applicants to apply, even those who may not meet every preferred requirement. - Demonstrated success serving as in-house counsel within a high-growth technology, digital health, or healthcare startup environment. - Comprehensive understanding of multi-state employment laws, operational compliance, and data privacy regulations necessary to support and manage the complexities of a fully distributed, 100% remote, nationwide workforce. - Expertise in the legal nuances of marketplace, gig-economy, or platform-based business models, specifically including advanced experience navigating complex worker classification issues (contractor vs. employee) and proactively developing risk-mitigation strategies at scale - Healthcare regulatory experience - Contract lifecycle management including drafting and negotiating contracts We're serious about your well-being!
