ABOUT THIS ROLE Software Engineers on our Applications teams help build the product experience that customers use every day on Astro — from the web console and CLI to the APIs, workflows, and features that make Airflow easier to use, monitor, and manage. The team owns the problems that make Astro a great product: usability, performance, reliability, and the day-to-day feature work that turns customer needs into shipped software across our web application, backend services, and APIs. We're looking for a Software Engineer to help build and ship that product — on our core web application, our backend services, or both; your specific team will be determined later in the interview process based on need and fit. You'll get hands-on experience with full-stack development, API design, and production feature delivery from day one — with the guidance of senior engineers as you build toward independent ownership. If you're early in your career and want to learn by shipping real, production-grade software that customers use directly, this is the team for you. This posting covers both Software Engineer I and Software Engineer II — the level you're hired at depends on experience and demonstrated scope. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Write, test, and maintain application code — from frontend components (React/TypeScript) to backend services and APIs (Golang and/or TypeScript) — following team standards. - Participate in code reviews, growing your judgment on what "production-ready" looks like. - Help build and troubleshoot product features, APIs, and UI workflows, working across the stack as needed. - Identify and fix bugs, edge cases, and small-scope issues, with support from senior teammates. - Maintain technical documentation, design notes, and testing coverage for the features you build. - Build working knowledge of distributed systems, service architecture, and Astronomer's product across the application layer. - Participate in on-call rotation, pairing with senior engineers to troubleshoot and resolve incidents. WHAT YOU'LL BRING - 0–4 years of experience in software or application engineering (or equivalent internship/coursework for Software Engineer I). - Working knowledge of at least one backend language (Go, TypeScript, Python) and familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (React or similar). - Understanding of REST/GraphQL API design and how frontend and backend systems communicate. - Comfortable with version control (Git) and automated testing practices (unit, integration, or end-to-end). - Clear written communication and a habit of documenting your work. - Comfortable receiving feedback and iterating quickly. Nice to Have - Hands-on experience with modern frontend tooling (React, state management, component libraries) or backend frameworks. - Familiarity with API design, authentication/authorization patterns, or GraphQL. - Familiarity with Apache Airflow or other data-orchestration tools. The estimated salary for this role ranges from $144,000 - $160,000 based on level and geography, along with an equity component and a comprehensive benefits package.
