- A large English-speaking talent pool across engineering, design, marketing, and ops.
- UTC+7 (WIB) overlaps Australian business hours, part of the European morning, and US Pacific mornings.
- The world's 4th-largest population — a talent supply that keeps growing every year.
Engagement models
Three routes commonly used to hire from Indonesia. We describe how each works factually — which fits best depends on your situation, and that's a decision for you and your own counsel.
Direct independent contractor
You pay the individual directly as a foreign client, typically via Wise, Deel, or Payoneer. No local entity is needed. The relationship is contract-for-services, not employment.
Employer of Record (EOR)
A third-party EOR employs the person locally on your behalf and invoices you — the EOR handles local compliance, payroll, and statutory contributions. Several global providers offer this for Indonesia.
Kemitraan (partnership)
A partnership-based structure recognized under Indonesian regulation, distinct from both an employment relationship and conventional outsourcing — a separate route that's become more relevant after recent outsourcing-regulation changes.
A note on Indonesian labor law: Permenaker 7/2026 narrows the routes available for outsourcing arrangements that route work through a third-party vendor, including many knowledge-work roles — a kemitraan structure is a separately governed path. This is general information, not legal advice — consult local counsel before choosing a structure for your specific engagement.
Payment rails
- Wise — Low-fee USD → IDR transfer with a transparent exchange rate; the most common rail for direct independent contractors.
- Deel / Remote — EOR/contractor platforms that bundle the contract, payment, and local compliance in one place.
- Payoneer — Another popular option for receiving cross-border payments, especially among freelancers.
- Direct bank transfer — Works, but typically carries higher fees and a less transparent rate than the rails above.
Timezone & culture practicalities
- Most Indonesian talent is on WIB (UTC+7) — full overlap with Australian business hours, part of the European morning, and US Pacific mornings.
- National holidays include Idul Fitri/Lebaran (typically several days, sometimes longer with a joint leave period) — plan the team calendar a few weeks ahead.
- Limited full overlap with US Eastern/European afternoon hours means async work (written docs, Loom, PR review) is a common habit on Indonesia-global remote teams.

Is it legal to hire Indonesians as remote contractors?⌄
Yes. Independent contractor agreements between a foreign company and an Indonesian individual are legal under Indonesian law, and cross-border payment platforms such as Wise, Deel, and Payoneer are widely used for this route — no local entity is required. Separately, Permenaker 7/2026 narrows the routes available for arrangements that route work through a third-party outsourcing vendor, including many knowledge-work roles — a kemitraan (partnership) structure is a distinct path some companies use instead. This is general information, not legal advice — consult local counsel for your specific engagement.
Do I need a local entity?⌄
No, not for a direct independent-contractor engagement — this route doesn't require setting up a local entity. Some employers set up a PT PMA (a locally incorporated entity) for other reasons, such as hiring at volume through a formal local payroll; that's a separate, heavier path. This is general information, not legal or tax advice — consult local counsel and a tax advisor before deciding.
What about IP assignment?⌄
Include an explicit IP-assignment clause in the contract. Under Indonesian law, the default is that the creator (the individual contractor) retains rights to the work they produce unless the contract assigns it to the hiring company — this doesn't happen automatically just because you're paying for the work. This is general information, not legal advice — have a lawyer review the IP clause in your contract.
Typical rates?⌄
Across the 13 roles we benchmark, remote-USD pay for Indonesian professionals typically runs $35k–$150k/year depending on role and seniority — see the full breakdown above. These are benchmark estimates, not quotes.
English proficiency?⌄
Indonesia has one of Southeast Asia's larger English-speaking professional pools, particularly among university-educated tech, design, marketing, and ops talent in major cities. Proficiency varies by individual — screen for it directly in the interview, the same way you would for any remote hire.
