Cron, one LLM call, LangGraph or an agent: which one writes social posts worth publishing?
Runs 2026-10-16 · updated 2026-10-24 · 190 clean runs + 74 fault runs · CC BY 4.0
We turned 5 blog posts into a LinkedIn post, an X thread and a 5-slide carousel four ways, on two models, with the same meter and the same checks. The design was pre-registered; what changed after the runs is listed under "Changes from the plan". The automated checks picked the simplest: a cron template passed 100% of the time at $0, but only because it copies the post. On whether a post is good we have one reader, who also wrote the source posts; they rated 0 of 84 posts fine to publish as-is. Whether a framework worked depended on the model: Hermes Agent passed the checks on 93% of deepseek-v4-flash runs and 0% of llama-4-scout runs.
What to take away
- Start with a template. If you need accurate, cheap posts from your own articles, plain code that reformats the article never makes things up and costs nothing. It is a copy, not new writing, so a person still has to edit it.
- Choose the model before the framework. The same framework went from failing every run to the best option depending on the model. Check that your model really makes tool calls before you adopt an agent.
- More steps are not automatically better. The graph with critique and revision passed as often as one LLM call, at about 3x the cost per passing post. The agent can do better, but on its best model it cost 11x as much as one LLM call per passing post.
- Automated checks measure safe, not good. Passing JSON, length, link and number checks did not mean anyone wanted to post it. Keep a human reader in the loop, and test the checker too: our number check flagged numbers that were correct.
- Judge for yourself: every output, unedited, is under "See the input and the outputs".
What we compared
- Cron template: pastes the post's title, description and paragraphs into each platform's format. No LLM.
- Cron + 1 LLM call: one request that writes all three formats.
- LangGraph graph: fetch, draft, validate in code, critique with an LLM, revise (at most twice).
- Hermes Agent: an autonomous agent with terminal and file tools, capped at 15 turns and 600 seconds, that fetches the post and saves its own result.
Each LLM arm ran 6 times per post per model (llama-4-scout and deepseek-v4-flash on Cloudflare Workers AI). Every model call went through one proxy that recorded tokens and cost. A post "passes" if its JSON is valid, its lengths fit each platform, its link is right, it uses no number the post does not contain, and its writing-style score is at least 70.
See the input and the outputs
Judge for yourself. For each source post, below is the input every arm got, then what each arm wrote, unedited. We did not pick the best ones: these are the first run of every arm on every post, on deepseek-v4-flash (the model every arm finishes on; the cron template uses no model). Each output shows its check result and that run's LLM calls, tokens, cost and time.

Only 22% of remote job listings disclose pay. Here's what two brand designer roles actually pay in 2026. On Loker Dollar, among 3,940 active remote listings, just 853 (22%) show a salary or rate. Two brand design roles that do: - Stevens: Brand Identity Designer, $3,000–$5,000 per fixed project - Sidekicks Creative Studio: Brand Identity Designer, $1,500–$3,000 per fixed project Other design roles: WTP Global video edits $800–$1,200, Love Isn't Blind video editor $1,000–$2,000/month, South Digital ops lead $2,000–$4,000/month. 64% of listings accept worldwide remote applicants. The low pay visibility means many firms prefer private negotiations. For freelancers, focusing on the minority that publish rates gives a clearer benchmark. Contrarian take: chasing the top-end $3,000–$5,000 fixed contracts can lock you into short, high-pressure sprints, while a modest $1,500–$3,000 retainer may provide steadier cash flow and room for upselling. Remote brand designer pay in 2026 is a $1,500–$5,000 fixed-price market — but only 22% of remote listings ever show the money. We looked at 3,940 active remote listings on Loker Dollar. Just 853 (22%) disclose any pay figure. The two brand-design postings that do publish rates sit at $3,000–$5,000 (Stevens, fixed project) and $1,500–$3,000 (Sidekicks Creative Studio, fixed project). The rest of the market is more opaque: 78% of listings omit pay, and 64% (2,507 roles) are open to worldwide applicants. One takeaway for freelancers: a higher fixed price is not always better. A $3,000–$5,000 lump-sum sprint can mean short, high-pressure delivery windows, while a $1,500–$3,000 retainer may give steadier cash flow and room to upsell. 12% of remote job listings now require AI skills. That's 487 of 3,928 active listings analyzed by Loker Dollar. The template's 100% is 5 distinct outputs, each run twice. The second column recounts without the numbers check's false alarms on abbreviations like "$293k". Model calls in the 264 counted runs cost $2.29. The decision rule, fixed in advance: pick the cheapest arm unless a more complex one beats it by at least 15 points, wins 60% of human pairs, and costs at most 3x per passing post. Nothing beat the template, so the rule picks the cron template; among the LLM arms it picks the single LLM call.
What one human reader said
The reader saw 42 pairs of posts without knowing the arm and picked the one more worth publishing, or "neither". We planned three readers; only one was available, the site owner, who also wrote the source posts. So this is one opinion, not a panel, and under the pre-registration it does not feed the decision rule. In pairs that included the template, the reader picked it 12 of 15 decided times; overall 9 of 42 answers were "neither". The template copies the reader's own sentences, so any bias here favours it.
| Pairing | Wins | Neither |
|---|---|---|
| Cron template vs Cron + 1 LLM call | 5 – 2 | 0 |
| Cron template vs LangGraph graph | 4 – 0 | 3 |
| Cron template vs Hermes Agent | 3 – 1 | 3 |
| Cron + 1 LLM call vs LangGraph graph | 4 – 1 | 2 |
| Cron + 1 LLM call vs Hermes Agent | 4 – 3 | 0 |
| LangGraph graph vs Hermes Agent | 1 – 5 | 1 |
None of the 84 posts was rated fine to publish as-is. The reasons the reader gave: the LLM versions bent or padded facts, read as generic, missed the platform's format or length, and often opened with a figure and repeated the same figure in the next paragraph.
The checks measure safe, not good
The template passes every check because it copies the post. We also read every output and coded its failures. 54 outputs use the blog page's own counters or sidebar ads as content ("1427 open Engineering roles"); the checks passed 41 of them. All 16 failures of the numbers check are false alarms on abbreviations like "$293k". Our own source posts also contain errors that get copied, such as "the only listing with a disclosed rate" in a post that also says 23% of its listings show pay.
The repeated-figure pattern, counted mechanically (the LinkedIn hook and next paragraph, or tweet 1 and tweet 2, share a figure; years ignored):
| Arm | Outputs | Repeat a figure |
|---|---|---|
| Cron template | 10 | 8 (80.0%) |
| Cron + 1 LLM call | 60 | 20 (33.3%) |
| LangGraph graph | 60 | 21 (35.0%) |
| Hermes Agent | 30 | 17 (56.7%) |
The template inherits it from the source: 4 of the 5 posts with a number in the title repeat it in their description.
Automated graders do not stand in for the human either. The LLM judge's scores do not track the reader (Spearman -0.085 over 52 outputs). Neither did our own coding ("would publish"): on the 20 pairs where it picked exactly one side, the reader agreed 5 times and took the other side 13 times. That coding was done by an AI model, and we do not use it as a quality measure.
Arm and model depend on each other
| Outcome | Model | Arm | Arm × model | Source post | Residual |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Passes the checks | 3% (0–13) | 5% (0–22) | 32% (27–40) | 13% (2–20) | 47% (28–58) |
Share of the variance in passing the checks that each factor explains, across the three LLM arms (exploratory, not pre-registered; 95% ranges from resampling source posts). Arm alone and model alone are both small; the interaction is large: Hermes works on one model and fails completely on the other, while the single LLM call and LangGraph move only a little between models. The LLM judge's text score would put the model ahead of the arm, but the judge failed its pre-registered check against the human reader (Spearman -0.085, bar 0.5), so we do not use it.
Why Hermes failed on llama-4-scout
On llama, every Hermes turn came back empty. We replayed Hermes's first request outside Hermes, changing one thing per try. Llama returned proper tool calls in 3 of 7 variants: with a neutral one-line system prompt (streamed or not), and with the prompt Hermes builds for deepseek. This first-turn probe (one or two calls per variant) suggests the trigger is the system prompt Hermes picks for llama model names rather than the model's basic ability to call tools. The longer runs below show that is not the whole story.
We then turned on the two settings Hermes documents and leaves off for llama by default, in 30 extra runs (exploratory). With both on, llama does call the tools, but no run saved a result (0 of 30): posts written into the chat reply instead of the file, broken JSON, a full context, or a dropped gateway connection. Hermes's 0% on llama reflects Hermes's defaults and the model.
| Settings | Runs | Saved a result |
|---|---|---|
| tool_use_enforcement, streamed | 10 | 0 |
| tool_use_enforcement + execution_guidance | 10 | 0 |
| tool_use_enforcement, not streamed | 10 | 0 |
Under faults
Four faults were injected: a missing post (404), a rate limit (429), a broken first JSON reply, and a post without numbers. On the post without numbers, no arm invented one. The single LLM call failed on 429 because it does not retry; LangGraph survived because its OpenAI client retries by default. On the 404, "crashed" for the single LLM call and LangGraph means the script exited with an error and published nothing, which is the safe result. Read Hermes's row with care: half its fault runs are on llama, where it saved nothing with or without a fault, so "stopped clean" there says little. "Infra error" means Hermes's own gateway timed out at start-up, before reaching the model; those runs were re-run once.
| Arm | 404 | 429 | JSON | No numbers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cron template | crashed 1 | — | — | recovered 1 |
| Cron + 1 LLM call | crashed 6 | crashed 6 | recovered 6 | recovered 3, published bad 3 |
| LangGraph graph | crashed 6 | recovered 6 | published bad 6 | recovered 1, published bad 5 |
| Hermes Agent | stopped clean 6 | recovered 3, stopped clean 3 | infra error 2, stopped clean 4 | infra error 1, recovered 3, stopped clean 2 |
Does the verdict hold?
The pre-registered rule cannot leave the template: it costs $0, so every other arm's cost ratio is infinite, and the human condition needs a panel of at least three readers, which we do not have. Among the LLM arms alone the result is closer. On deepseek alone, Hermes passes 33 points more often than the single LLM call (interval lower bound +13), so the gap condition is met; what blocks it is cost, 11x per passing post against a 3x limit, and the human condition. We re-applied the rule across 80 settings per row (gap 5–25 points, cost ratio 2–5x, prices 0.5–2x); the pick among the LLM arms stays the single LLM call, pooled or per model.
Limits you should know
- Two open models on one provider. Other models could change the ranking, especially for the agent.
- 5 source posts from one site, all about remote jobs.
- One human reader, who also wrote the source posts. A preference for their own wording cannot be ruled out.
- The checks are a proxy. This study shows the proxy passes a lot a human would not publish.
- Deepseek's thinking mode was off for every arm, equally.
What would change our mind: a panel of at least three readers who did not write the sources and agree (alpha ≥ 0.4) that an LLM arm is better, or a bigger model that lets Hermes finish on llama.
Changes from the plan
- After the pilot, before the counted runs: deepseek's thinking mode was turned off (in the pilot it spent its whole token budget on hidden reasoning), every call got the same output cap, and the source posts were frozen as snapshots because their live counters changed between snapshot and run.
- Some Hermes fault runs never reached the model because its gateway timed out at start-up. They were first coded as clean stops; after the runs they were re-run once and coded infra error where it happened again.
- One human reader instead of three. No agreement statistic, and the panel does not feed the decision rule.
- The LLM judge failed its pre-registered correlation bar against the reader. The correlation was computed against per-output win rate rather than the planned Bradley-Terry score. We show it only as a failed result.
- Exploratory, not pre-registered: the failure coding by an AI model, the variance split with an interaction, the sensitivity sweep, the repeated-figure count, and the Hermes probe and settings runs.
- Intervals are unadjusted. The pre-registered Bonferroni correction over six comparisons was not applied; with it, the gap between Hermes and LangGraph is no longer clear.
- The pre-registered fairness review had not happened at publication. We asked the Hermes Agent maintainers in a GitHub issue on 2026-10-23 and had no reply by 2026-10-24; the LangGraph forum did not let our new account post. We will add their comments here.
