Remote job application checklist

.Tailor your resume to this specific jobMatch the keywords and skills in the job description to your resume — most remote employers scan dozens of applications and reward the closest match first.

.Format your resume to pass an ATS scanUse standard section headings, no tables or graphics, and a simple single-column layout so applicant tracking software can read every line.

.Quantify your achievementsReplace vague duties with numbers — "grew signups 40% in 6 months" reads far stronger than "responsible for growth".

.Write a short, specific cover letterSkip the generic template — name the company, the role, and one concrete reason you're a fit in 3-4 sentences.

.Attach a portfolio or work-sample linkFor design, writing, and engineering roles, a live link to real work does more convincing than a resume bullet ever will.

.Use a professional email addressfirstname.lastname@ reads more credible to a foreign recruiter than a nickname address, and most global application forms don't expect a photo.

.Check the required timezone overlapConfirm how many working hours you'd need to overlap with the team before applying — a role needing 6 hours of US-Pacific overlap is a very different lifestyle than 2.

.Verify the listing isn't a scamCheck the company's domain, look them up on LinkedIn, and be wary of any listing that asks for payment or banking details before an offer.

.Log the application somewhere you'll check againA spreadsheet or tracker with company, date, and status stops you from losing track once you're applying to more than a handful of roles.

.Make sure your LinkedIn matches your resumeRecruiters cross-check both — mismatched job titles or dates between the two is a common reason a strong resume gets a second look for the wrong reason.

.Plan a follow-up if you hear nothing in 1-2 weeksA short, polite check-in email after 7-10 business days keeps you visible without coming across as impatient.

.Proofread everything one more time before sendingA typo in the company name or a leftover [Company Name] placeholder from a template is one of the fastest ways to get filtered out.
