The highest-paid coding skills are the most geo-locked for Indonesia-based applicants; the skills that open global remote work are communication, sales, and leadership.
The advice Indonesian job-seekers hear about remote work is almost always the same: "learn to code." It sounds right — engineering salaries at global companies look irresistible. But when we looked at 12,891 remote listings in our own corpus, the data told a surprising, slightly uncomfortable story.
The door that's actually open to Indonesians isn't the coding door.
For each skill we paired two numbers: its median pay, and how often listings requiring that skill are genuinely open to an Indonesia-based applicant (not gated by "US only", "authorized to work in the US", or "Remote in Europe").
The result splits cleanly into two groups.
The top-paying technical skills turn out to be the most locked:
So of every 10 high-paying engineering roles, roughly 9 require US/EU work authorization — a door that's shut to an Indonesia-based applicant, no matter how good the code.
The second group is the mirror image — well-paid and open:
These aren't second-tier skills. Leadership carries the single highest median pay of any skill we measured. The difference is that the roles rewarding it are far more often open to anyone — including you.
If your remote strategy has been "become a software engineer at a Silicon Valley startup," the data suggests a more realistic path: build people and business skills — communication, sales, negotiation, management — which pay just as well but whose doors are far more open.
A few more findings from the same dataset:
The catch: most listings don't state their location rule at all, so filtering the genuinely-open ones by hand is exhausting. That's where our Hunt assistant helps: tell it your skills, and it surfaces the remote listings that both match and are open to Indonesia — then helps you apply automatically.

The highest-paying remote skills for Indonesian job seekers include leadership at ~$135k/yr and sales at ~$90k/yr, which are more open to applicants based in Indonesia compared to coding skills.
Many high-paying coding roles require work authorization in the US or EU, making them less accessible. For example, only ~14% of Python listings are open to Indonesia-based applicants.
Remote work pays significantly more, averaging around ~$78k/yr, which is about 17 times the local median salary in Indonesia.
